Chinese Travelers Are Choosing Hotels Earlier Than Ever

Chinese outbound travel discovery is increasingly driven by interests, travel scenarios, and intent not simply by destination names.

At the center of this shift is Xiaohongshu (XHS), which has become an increasingly influential platform for how Chinese travelers discover and plan their overseas trips. The platform itself has described this evolution as a move from guide-led planning to interest-led planning, where travelers begin with what they want to experience rather than simply where they want to go.

This shift is also supported by independent research. Studies and tourism-industry surveys, including research from Dragon Trail and academic studies of Chinese outbound travel behavior, show that social platforms have become an important source of travel inspiration and destination information particularly among younger Chinese travelers. XHS, in particular, plays a significant role in shaping what travelers discover, consider, and ultimately choose.

While some of the platform-specific figures referenced below come from Xiaohongshu’s own releases and partner presentations, the broader trend is consistent with findings from independent research: Chinese travelers are increasingly discovering destinations through their interests and desired experiences, long before they begin searching for a specific place

Travel Discovery Is Being Rewritten

The traditional travel-planning journey was relatively straightforward: choose a destination first, then decide what to do there. But that logic is changing.

According to Xiaohongshu’s 2026 tourism forum materials, outbound travel is increasingly shifting from guide-led planning to interest-led discovery. Rather than starting with a destination name, travelers are often inspired by what they want to experience whether that means discovering hidden places, exploring local lifestyles, seeking something new, or finding experiences that resonate with them personally. Singapore Tourism Board’s formal collaboration with Xiaohongshu further reflects the platform’s growing importance in understanding how Chinese travelers discover, evaluate, and engage with travel experiences. This shift is also visible in how people search on XHS. In its 2024 mid-year search report, Xiaohongshu stated that 70% of users use search, with users conducting an average of six searches per day, while one-third of new users use search on their very first day. Notably, the examples highlighted by the platform were often scenario-based rather than destination-based such as finding less-crowded scenic spots, discovering good restaurants, or searching for practical lifestyle experiences.

The nature of travel searches is becoming more specific, too. ChinaTravelNews, citing Xiaohongshu platform data in 2025, reported that travel-related queries are becoming longer and more detailed, particularly when users search for transportation, accommodation, and attraction experiences.   For marketers, this signals a fundamental shift in how travel discovery happens. The journey increasingly begins with an experience, not a destination. Travelers may first search for the kind of meal they want, the view they hope to wake up to, the pace of a getaway, or the activity they want to experience and only later decide where that experience should take place.

In this new environment, being visible on Xiaohongshu is not simply about appearing when someone searches for a city or hotel name. It is about becoming part of the inspiration and consideration process before the destination has even been decided.

XHS Has Become the Search Layer of Travel Inspiration

Xiaohongshu is no longer just a social platform for scrolling through travel content. It is becoming a search-driven layer of travel planning, where inspiration increasingly turns into active research.

Dragon Trail’s April 2025 survey of 1,022 Chinese travelers found that social media was the leading source of outbound travel inspiration, cited by 50% of respondents, ahead of friends and family at 39%. Among travelers aged 18–34, Xiaohongshu also ranked ahead of Ctrip as a source of outbound destination information.

The distinction is important: inspiration creates desire, while search helps shape decisions. Recent academic research supports this shift, showing that social media including Xiaohongshu can influence Chinese travelers’ short- and medium-term intentions to travel abroad. In other words, what travelers discover on social media can influence not only where they want to go, but what they may actually choose to do.

Xiaohongshu’s own travel data reinforces this behavior. According to figures shared by Dragon Trail from a 2024 Xiaohongshu webinar, the platform recorded 731 million overseas-travel-related searches in 2023, up 240% from the previous year. Outbound travelers reportedly begin planning 50 – 60 days before a trip, conducting extensive searches and consuming large volumes of travel content along the way.

This makes XHS strategically important because it sits upstream of booking. Travelers may not have chosen a hotel, neighborhood, or even a destination yet but they are already searching, comparing, and imagining their trip.

Experience Keywords Are Replacing Broad Destination Queries

One of the clearest shifts in Chinese outbound travel discovery is that travelers are increasingly searching for experiences rather than destinations.

Dragon Trail’s 2024 summary of Xiaohongshu travel data found strong growth in experience-driven searches, including “independent” (+390%), “visa-free” (+743%), “seasonal” (+263%), and “experience” (+282%) year over year. The rise of “experience” is particularly telling, covering everything from nature and cultural activities to concerts and exhibitions.

ChinaTravelNews also reported in 2025 that travel searches on XHS are becoming more specific and detailed. Users are increasingly comparing practical aspects of flights, cruises, hotels, activities, services, facilities, and local experiences. Rather than simply asking “Where should I go?”, they are searching for “What kind of experience do I want?”

This creates a new path to discovery for travel brands. A traveler may ultimately choose Bangkok, Phuket, or Thailand, but their journey could begin with a much more specific need: a rooftop bar, a family-friendly hotel, a hidden café, a riverside restaurant, or things to do on a rainy day.  These examples reflect the broader scenario-based, long-tail search behavior documented by Xiaohongshu and travel-industry research.

Destination keywords still matter but the sequence is changing. On XHS, the destination is increasingly the answer to an experience-led search, rather than the starting point of the journey.

Why This Changes Discovery for Hotels, Restaurants, and Attractions

When travel discovery starts with experiences rather than destinations, travel brands can enter the customer journey much earlier.

Tourism Malaysia’s 2025 Xiaohongshu partnership described XHS as a “Discover-Plan-Experience” ecosystem, showing how the platform is increasingly used to create interest, not simply capture existing demand.

Xiaohongshu’s Dubai tourism case study reinforces this shift: as interest in Dubai grew, hotels, attractions, and department stores became major search categories, showing how destination discovery can break into specific experiences.

Trust matters, too. With 90% of XHS content reported to be user-generated, traveler posts and creator recommendations provide powerful social proof alongside official brand content.

For travel brands, XHS is no longer just about visibility. It is where discovery, trust, and consideration increasingly come together.

What an Effective XHS SEO Strategy Looks Like

An effective XHS SEO strategy starts with traveler intent, not brand messaging. As Xiaohongshu’s tourism materials and destination partnerships increasingly emphasize, travelers are discovering trips through interests and experiences. Brands therefore need to optimize for how people search, not simply what they want to say.

Build around experience-led keywords

Move beyond broad destination terms and create keyword clusters around activities, travel moments, and lifestyle interests. For hotels, this could include family stays, wellness retreats, nightlife, rainy-day activities, or riverside dining. The goal is to match the real scenarios travelers are searching for.

Follow the travel planning journey

Travelers may begin researching 50 – 60 days before a trip, often making dozens of searches before booking. Content should therefore support different stages from early inspiration and comparison to practical, in-destination information.

Prioritize authenticity

On a user-generated platform, polished advertising alone is not enough. Content that reflects real people, relatable situations, and genuine experiences can feel more natural and trustworthy. Successful travel content often speaks directly to specific audiences such as families, couples, food lovers, or young professionals.

Build a searchable content ecosystem

XHS SEO is not about making one post rank. It is about building a long-term library of content that answers different traveler questions, strengthens brand visibility, and stays discoverable throughout the planning journey.

Ultimately, effective XHS SEO means turning traveler intent into content that can be discovered, trusted, and acted on.

Experiences Now Sit at the Top of the Funnel

The clearest takeaway from current XHS and travel-market research is that Chinese travelers are not choosing fewer destinations, they are discovering them differently.

On XHS, travel searches increasingly begin with interests, activities, moods, and lifestyles rather than destination names. As experience-led searches grow and travelers spend more time researching, the destination often becomes the result of discovering the right experience.

For travel brands, this changes the role of marketing. Being visible on XHS is no longer simply about promoting a destination. It is about being discoverable when travelers search for the experience they want.

Brands that understand this shift can enter the journey earlier, build trust through relevant content, and influence consideration before travelers reach a booking platform.

Travelers don’t search for places first. They search for experiences.
